Project A Faraway City represents an interpretation of a city which perhaps exists in the real, imagined or forgotten places. A Faraway City displays the artificial environments collected from different images, observational drawings, and imaginative sketches compounded together to create a space that oscillates somewhere between a dream and reality. With this project Varnagiene investigated a closer look at a city that encoded in multi-layers between inner and outer worlds, spiritual and physical space. Here she has attempted to recreate a house of a distant city – a form of utopian reminiscence about a faraway city from her own and everyone’s memories. People feel sentimental or nostalgic attachment to the places where they’ve lived. In Varnagiene’s work, she considers separate fragments of memories of the cities which were a home in some unspecified space (Varnagiene calls this a faraway city). Varnagiene approaches with various media, employing painting, printmaking, collage, photography, and performance to assemble the main theme, she attempts to convey an ability to perceive a sense of home from a faraway city where she once lived.
