Sophie Mitchell

Sophie Mitchell studied in Manchester School of Art, graduating with Degree in Fine Art. Since her graduation Mitchell has worked independently and alongside Galleries, Festivals and Fairs. After a series of group shows, she completed a succession of commissions and now continues her practice in Dublin.

Sophie Mitchell’s work encounters the idea of the authentic and the idealized through the mediums of sculpture, photography and printed matter. Often her works are formed in response to environmental issues and follow a subconscious trail of thought developed through unplanned walks in the untouched environment.

Whilst pondering issues of globalization, contained landscapes, modern nomadism and the ‘bumbling tourist’ Mitchell walks without distraction. The monotonous practice of walking promotes the development of organic thought/ideas/questions.  Once in the studio Mitchell revisits these thoughts and create works in response. With the use of process-based methods such as etching, sewing and sculpting she mimics the monotonous act of walking, this enables again the mindset required for organic thought. Through multiple mediums the thoughts often develop to form a series of pieces, these are later positioned to form installations; these sculptural groupings are referred to as contained landscapes. Each individual piece often has its own reflection and can be displayed on its own. However, it is when Mitchell’s subtle linear etchings are offset by outer surrounding components a further line of thought is sparked in the viewer.
